NHK’s “History Detective” to Feature a Noroshi (Beacon) Relay Reenactment!

The NHK General TV program “History Detective”, which tackles history through field research, scientific experiments, and simulations, will broadcast a special reenactment of an ancient communication method: the Noroshi (Beacon) Relay. The experiment was conducted at the Shiawase no Mori Park Observation Plaza in Katsuragi City.

During the Asuka period, fearing invasions from China and the Korean Peninsula, Japan developed a beacon route from Kyushu through the Seto Inland Sea to Asuka.
Will the signal, relayed from Matsubara City to Myōjin-yama in Ōji Town, then via Katsuragi’s Shiawase no Mori Park, successfully reach the “detectives” waiting near Mount Unebi? Don’t miss the program!
The episode also explores the Taika Reform (645 AD), when Prince Naka no Ōe (later Emperor Tenji) overthrew Soga no Iruka. More than a political incident, it was a sweeping reform that redefined Japan’s state structure. The program investigates the real image of this great reform through archaeological finds beneath the NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station, unusual customs passed down since the Asuka period, and even defensive systems attributed to Prince Naka no Ōe.
