Taima-dera Temple Nerikuyō-e Ceremony 2026

The Taima-dera Temple Nerikuyō-e Ceremony will be held again in 2026.
What Is the Taima-dera Nerikuyō-e Ceremony?
The Taima-dera Nerikuyō-e Ceremony recreates the legend of Princess Chūjō, who is said to have attained Buddhahood while still alive at Taima-dera Temple. It is one of Yamato’s best-known spring events and is said to have begun in the middle of the Heian period.
Its formal name is the Shōju Raigō Nerikuyō-e Ceremony, but it has long been familiar to local people under names such as Nerikuyō, Oneri, and Taima Renzo.
Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan
In 2024, the ceremony was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
Among the reasons cited were the following:
- the distinctive movements of the procession as it slowly makes its way across the bridge
- the way the event has developed in connection with local legends and traditions
