Jomyoji Temple

The temple was founded by Taiko Gyoyu, a venerable priest respected by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, and his wife Hojo Masako.
Ashikaga Yoshikane, the husband of Hojo Masako's sister, provided financial support.
Originally called Gokurakuji Temple, it is the fifth of the Kamakura Gozan (five Zen temples of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism in Kamakura, with “Gozan” referring to their status).
In the Muromachi period, the temple prospered as the ancestral tomb of the Ashikaga family, the shoguns. In the cemetery, there is a stupa said to be the tomb of Sadauji, the father of Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Muromachi shogunate.
