Kenchoji Temple

It is the first of the Kamakura Gozan (five Zen temples of the Rinzai sect in Kamakura; “Gozan” refers to their status).
It is the head temple of the Kenchoji School of the Rinzai sect.
It is the temple where Lanxi Daolong, a Zen monk who came to Japan from Song China, propagated Zen, and it was strongly associated with the shogunate.
The principal image is a seated Jizo Bodhisattva.
The main buildings, designated as National Important Cultural Properties, are lined up in a straight line, and a huge Chinese juniper, which is said to have been seeded by Michitaka, towers over the area.
Kenchin jiru soup with vegetables and tofu is said to have originated here.
