Oninoiwaya (Burial Mounds)

Oninoiwaya is the only round tumulus with a horizontal stone chamber among the Saitobaru Burial Mounds. It is believed that when Ooyamatsumi no Kami was asked by an ogre to approve the marriage with his daughter Konohanasakuya-hime, he instructed the ogre to build the “Iwaya” (grotto or stone chamber) as a condition to give approval to the marriage.
Legend has it that a piece of stone in the stone chamber is missing because Ooyamatsumi no Kami removed it from the completed stone chamber as he didn’t want her daughter to marry the ogre.
A rock, which is believed to be the removed stone, is enshrined at the entrance of the approach to Ishinuki Jinja Shrine.
