Discover the Beauty of Sakura and History

Matsumae Park, located in Matsumae Town, Hokkaido, is a sprawling historical park that surrounds Matsumae Castle, Japan’s northernmost traditional castle.
Covering 150,000 square meters, the park blends lush seasonal scenery with the charm of an old castle town.
With over 10,000 cherry trees featuring around 250 different varieties, it is recognized across Japan as one of Hokkaido’s premier spots for cherry blossom viewing.
Thanks to the variety of species, the blooming season spans more than a month—from mid-April to mid-May—offering visitors the rare chance to enjoy sakura at a leisurely pace.
Each spring, the Matsumae Sakura Festival (Matsumae Sakura Matsuri) transforms the park with nighttime illuminations, food stalls, and traditional performances—drawing visitors from across the country.
The park also features cultural attractions such as Matsumae Castle, the Matsumae Clan Residence, and other preserved historical buildings, allowing visitors to stroll through a living tapestry of nature and history—while discovering stories from the town’s samurai past.
