Shinkyo Bridge

The beautiful Shinkyo Bridge shines with its vermilion lacquer and is a fitting adornment for the front door to the holy place of Nikko.
It used to be called "Yamasuge no Jabashi" (Bridge of Snakes with Wild Sedges) and is a designated important cultural asset as one of the structures of Nikko Futarasan-jinja Shrine. It is also registered as a World Heritage Site.
It is the only ancient bridge in Japan built in the drawbridge form used in ravines between mountains, and is one of the three unusual bridges of Japan (along with Kintai Bridge in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Saruhashi Bridge in Yamanashi Prefecture).
