Bridge Pier on the Old Sagami River

This pier emerged from a paddy field when the Great Kanto Earthquake struck in 1923.
It is thought to have been built by Inage Shigenari, a senior vassal of the Kamakura Shogunate (1185-1333), for the repose of his deceased wife.
The Sagami River ran through the area at the time. It is a designated historic site and a natural monument.
