Izanagi-ryu Maikagura

The Izanagi-ryu Maikagura ritual is a practice which has been passed down for several hundred years in the folk religion of Kami City, and has even been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
It is thought that the practice originated by blending elements of Onmyodo, Shugendo, Buddhism, and Shinto.
Befukyo Onsen, a hot spring in Kami City, contains a room in which the Izanagi-ryu ritual practices are reproduced.
Here, you can see members of the preservation association perform the Maikagura dance, or try on the costume and do the dance yourself. Reservation required.
