Io-ji Temple

The temple was founded in A.D. 765 by Shodo Shonin, a founder of a group of temples in Nikko.
It is said that Higashi Koyasan, a sango (a title prefixed to the name of a Buddhist temple) of the temple, was given by Kobodaishi Kukai.
In the precinct of the temple, there are nine buildings lined up, such as the main hall and other halls.
Among them, five buildings are designated by the prefecture as tangible cultural properties.
