Kamikaze Martyrdom Stone Monument (Kawatana Torpedo School Train ing center Ruins)

In a corner of Ogushi Bay exists the ruins of a temporary torpedo-boat training center that was transferred from Yokosuka to Kawatana during the final years of World War II.
A monument was built here to honor and pray for the repose of the souls of three thousand young men of the Japanese Imperial Navy who went through training as members of the Japanese Special Attack Units and perished far away in southern seas.
The monument was built in May, 1967 in response to former unit members’ call out to the whole country.
It was made on the site of the Imperial Navy’s torpedo-boat training center, using stones from the intense south-sea battlefronts Okinawa and Corregidor Island.
