Time Bell Tower

The Time Bell Tower, rising above the roofs of traditional storehouse-style houses, is called “kanetsuki-do” (“bell-tolling hall”) by locals and is a symbol of Kawagoe.
In earlier times, a bell-ringer would tell the time at certain hours of the day. However, the bell tower now operates mechanically and rings the bell four times a day (6:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00).
The pleasant ring of the bell was chosen by the Ministry of the Environment in 1996 as one of the 100 Selections of Soundscape in Japan.
