Ken Shimura Tree

The Ken Shimura Trees are a trees that were planted in 1976 (Showa 51) to commemorate the achievements of the late Ken Shimura, who was a comedian from Higashimurayama City and performed the “Higashimurayama Folk Song” in the national TV program “Hachiji Da Yo! Zen'in Shugo (It's 8 O’clock! Everybody Gather 'Round)” and made the name of Higashimurayama City known nationwide.
The three zelkova trees, which are the symbol of the city, are planted at the rotary at the east exit of Higashimurayama Station, were set up in 2015 (Heisei 27) with a tree plaque handwritten by Mr. Shimura to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the city administration coming into force.
Ken Shimura, who conveyed the charm of his hometown to the entire country through songs such as “Tama Lake,” “Sayama Tea-growing District,” “Compassion Is Warm,” passed away on March 29, 2020, but the “Ken Shimura Trees” are still alive in his beloved Higashimurayama City.
