Mt. Kugami

Mt. Kugami (313m), which is situated next to the sacred mountain Yahiko, features a large variety of historical sites, including the oldest temple in the Echigo area, "Kokujo-ji", as well as "Gogoan" and "Otogo-jinja Souan", which is where the monk Ryokan once stayed. From the mountain's summit you can see the Sea of Japan, as well as Sado, Noto Peninsula, and the Echigo Sanzan mountains off in the distance.
A little below the summit is "Jaku-zure", a scenic area with unique rock formations and old pine trees.
This area also offers a view of Echigo Plain.
The mountain is also rich in rare flora and fauna with vegetation that includes hepatica and Asian fawnlily, as well as Lilium medeoloides, which are normally only found in subalpine areas, and the Japanese luehdorfia, also known as the "Goddess of Spring".
