Fujinoki Tumulus

The Fujinoki Tumulus was excavated in 1985 and attracted much attention because of its many splendid burial artefacts.
The discovery of two adult males buried together has led to controversy over the identity of the deceased.
In the records kept at Horyu-ji Temple, the Fujinoki burial mound was referred to as "Misasaki" or "Misasaki Mountain", which led to the theory that it was the tomb of Emperor Sushun.
Another theory based on historical facts and the time of its construction was that it was the tomb of either the Prince Anahobe or the Prince Yakebe.
Local people believed that the burial was of a person close to Prince Shotoku... and that this was a rare historical discovery.
The stone chambers are not normally open to the public, but special exhibitions are held in spring and autumn.
