Hotojima Island

Dating back to 1903.
Hotojima Island in the Bungo Channel is famous for its pelagic tuna, and is still today the mainstay of the fishing industry.
With few flat areas, its steep slopes from mountains to the coast are lined with three and four storey houses, reminiscent of southern Mediterranean Europe.
The fishing village has been selected for preservation as one of 100 most important historical and cultural assets.
