Jissozan Shogakuji Temple

The Jissozan Shogakuji temple, founded by Nichiren Shonin in 1619, celebrated its 400th year anniversary in 2019.
The first thing you will notice, next to the bell tower in the temple grounds, is the beautiful statue of Hatsuko Misawa.
Hatsuko was the wife of Tsunamune, third lord of the Date clan in Sendai.
Tsunamune, was forced into hiding by the shogunate due to his bad behaviour, and was succeeded by his son Kamechiyo, who at the age of only two, became the fourth lord of Tsunamura. Hatsuko, prayed to the statue of Kishimojin for his safety.
His mother's wish was fulfilled, as Tsunamura overcame the so-called "Date Disturbance", a power struggle, and grew up to become a great lord.
The temple’s statues of Hatsuko and Kishimojin, are a permanent reminder of a mother's love for her child.
