The temple is the 77th temple of the sacred places in Shikoku.
At the beginning of the Nara period, Lord Wakenomichikata, from a powerful clan in the region, cut down a large mulberry tree and built a temple to enshrine a small statue of Bhaisajyaguru Buddha as its principal object of worship. This incident is regarded as the origin of the sacred places.
