Kamaishi Daikannon

As if keeping watch over Kamaishi Bay on the scenic Sankuri Coast, Kamaishi Daikannon stands atop Kamasaki in Odairacho.
This statue of Gyoran Kannon tenderly cradles a fish to her chest.
She displays a variety of expressions depending on the season.
This chalky white statue of Kannon was erected in 1970 by the Myohozan Sekiozenji Temple.
Since then it has come to be known by citizens in Kamaishi as a symbol of the city.
It offers prayer towards the bodhisattva Kanzeon that her love may bring peace in both this world and the beyond.
It reaches a height of 48.5m. The sublime sight of the statue can be seen whether you're on a boat off to fish or in Kamaishi itself.
The interior of the statue contains 13 floors.
It houses all manner of facilities, shrines and services for Buddhist prayer and such.
Furthermore, at the Gyoran viewing platform on the 11th & 12th floors you can look out over the incredible view of Kamaishi Bay and the Ozaki Peninsula.
There's a charming spot to see here beneath your feet too.
Thanks to a project sponsored by an NPO, this location has been chosen as a 'holy place for lovers', or in other words a romantic spot that's perfect for proposals.
