Hakone Rikyu Imperial Villa was built in 1886 (Meiji 19).
At that time, there was a magnificent gate called “Sanjou-mon” at this location, beyond which stood the detached palace.
Today, the gate is no longer there, but the area is still called “Sanjou-mon Ruins,
In spring, it is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms and azaleas.

Golden Flower Fukujuso

A plant called "Fukujuso" grows in front of the ruins of the Sanjomon gates.
It came to be called "Fukujuso" because of its golden flowers in early spring.
Later, it came to be called "Fukujuso" after the Chinese character for "longevity.
