Takahama Kyoshi (real name: Takahama Kiyoshi), born in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture (1874-1959), was a haiku poet and novelist.
He studied under Masaoka Shiki, the Japanese poet, author, and literary critic in the Meiji period and regarded as a major figure in the development of modern haiku poetry.
This haiku was written in October 1949, when he came to Kochi City by sea to attend the 200th issue of the haiku magazine "Ryumaki".
The monument was erected in June 1956 by Kochi City, the Kochi City Tourism Association and the Kochi Prefecture Cultural Organization Association.
