In the Eshunnido, Eshunni, a sister of Ryoan Emyo who founded this temple is enshrined.
It is said that Eshunni was an incredibly beautiful woman, but because of her beauty she was not allowed to be a priestess, so she burned her face with burning-hot tongs to show her determination, and then she was allowed to enter the priesthood.
Lastly, she piled up firewood in front of the Sanmon gate, set a fire and entered the fire for the relief of women.
In Buddhism, when someone burns themselves with fire and dies, it is called “Kajo”, and the current Eshunni-do was built on this spot where an act of kajo took place.
