Meguri (mooring hole)

These mooring holes were rocks (penetrated to have a hole) that tied the boating knot when ships sailing from Osaka to Hokkaido engaged in moorage.
Around the bay of Fukura Port (Ooma/Mizunoma), there are rocky places and reefs where holes of extended sections have been hollowed out to make holes so that ropes can be put through the holes to dock the ships.
These facilities here are called "Meguri."
They serve the functions of modern-day bollards, mooring buoys, and bitts.
During the prosperous times when ships sailing from Osaka to Hokkaido visited the area, "Meguri Fees" were charged to collect anchorage fees, which were used for maintenance and management.
They are special facilities that are not found in other places.
Currently, you can still find several dozen of these.
