Sukunahiko Jinja – Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto

Sukunahiko Jinja enshrines Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto as its principal deity.
Until the Edo period (1603~1868), the shrine was called Jingushiyakushija, in reference to the Twelve Divine Generals, protective deities that had been worshiped here, until they were moved to Rinzai Temple during the Meiji Restoration, which took place in 1868.
The outer struts below the roof of the main shrine building are decorated with sculptures of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac.
Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, the prefecture’s only god of medicine, is the patron deity of medical care and the medical industry.
Since the deity is believed to be the god of recovery from disease and of public entertainment, the shrine attracts numerous visitors from within and outside Shizuoka.
