SENSE ISLAND / LAND 2024: Art Unveiling Time and Earth in Yokosuka

After a two-year hiatus, “SENSE ISLAND” returns with an expanded and enhanced format! Originally launched on the uninhabited Sarushima (猿島) in 2019, this immersive art event now extends to downtown Yokosuka (横須賀市街地), evolving into “SENSE ISLAND / LAND.” This year’s edition offers visitors a blend of both daytime and nighttime art experiences at various venues.

Event Information

  • Dates:
    • October 26 (Sat) – December 15 (Sun), 2024
    • Sarushima (猿島) Venue: Nighttime events on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
    • Downtown Venues (横須賀市街地): Open during daytime hours (based on the operating hours of each location).

    • Sarushima (猿島) Venue: Sarushima Park (猿島公園), a historically significant uninhabited island off the coast of Yokosuka.

      Venues include Mikasa Terminal (三笠ターミナル), Verny Park (ヴェルニー公園), Mikasa Park (三笠公園), Heiwa Chuo Park (平和中央公園), Yokosuka City Museum of Nature and Human Culture (横須賀市自然・人文博物館), Yokosuka City Hall (横須賀市役所, weekdays only), Wakamatsu Market (若松マーケット), Uraga Dock (浦賀ドック), and more.

Event Highlights

“SENSE ISLAND / LAND 2024” invites visitors to explore Yokosuka’s (横須賀) rich history and culture through unique art installations and performances. This event emphasizes the city’s historical layers, blending past and present to create a captivating artistic experience across multiple locations.

Curated by Seiji Saito (齋藤精一) with guest curator Akira Aoki (青木彬), this year’s event features works by 13 renowned artists from Japan and beyond. Visitors can look forward to a diverse range of immersive artworks, live performances, and interactive workshops.

The event will feature a diverse lineup of artists, including:

  • Yui Usui, Hiroko Kikuchi, Kyunchome, Seiichi Saito, SIDE CORE, Takuro Tamayama, Choi Jeong Hwa
  • TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH (Kanae Hamamoto, Rina Maeda, Mari Matsubara, Hana Yamamoto)
  • Haruna Mitobe, Soichiro Mihara, Taichi Yakuoji, Aiko Yamamoto (planned)
