Yokosuka Museum of Art is currently closed for renovation work from November 4, 2025, through August 2026. Reopening is planned for September 2026.

Yokosuka Museum of Art Is Temporarily Closed, With Reopening Planned for September 2026

The current closure covers both the main museum building and the Taniuchi Rokuro Museum wing. The exact reopening date has not yet been announced and will be provided once it is confirmed. At this stage, the expected reopening period is September 2026.

What You Can Still Use During the Closure

Even during the temporary closure, the underground parking lot remains open as usual. The Sea Plaza, the lawn area in front of the museum, is open to visitors, and the Mountain Plaza may also be used, although access may be restricted depending on construction conditions. The rooftop plaza, the grated area enclosed by railings, is currently closed.

Restaurant Acquamare and the museum shop are also closed. The online museum shop, however, remains available.

What to Enjoy in the Kannonzaki Area During the Closure

The Kannonzaki area around the museum combines seaside scenery with places that are easy to explore on foot. At the center of the area is Kannonzaki Park, a large park on a cape that extends into Tokyo Bay. The park includes plazas, walking paths, natural surroundings, the lighthouse, and other facilities that make the area pleasant for a stroll.

Kannonsaki Lighthouse is one of the area’s best-known landmarks. It is known as Japan’s first Western-style lighthouse, and the current structure is the third generation. It is an easy stop while walking through Kannonzaki Park and offers both coastal views and a sense of the area’s history.

If you want to explore a little farther, Hashirimizu Shrine, Hashirimizu Reservoir, and the Hashirimizu Lower Gun Battery Site are also worth considering. Hashirimizu Shrine is associated with Yamato Takeru and Princess Ototachibana, while Hashirimizu Reservoir has historical ties to Verny. At the Hashirimizu Lower Gun Battery Site, visitors can see preserved Meiji-era military remains. These spots are good options for visitors who want to add some local history to their time by the coast.

The Architecture of Yokosuka Museum of Art

Yokosuka Museum of Art was designed by Riken Yamamoto, completed in 2006, and opened in 2007. This low-rise building is characterized by a double-skin structure of glass and steel panels and was planned to blend into the surrounding sea and forest landscape. Even when the galleries are closed, the relationship between the building’s exterior and its setting can still be appreciated on site.

Although Yokosuka Museum of Art is closed for now, the Kannonzaki area still offers coastal views, walking paths, and historically significant places to visit. While waiting for the museum to reopen, spending time in Kannonzaki is still one way to enjoy the area.
