Denzuin Temple

This temple was founded in by 1415 under the name "Muryosan Jukyoji Temple" by Ryoyo Shogei, a priest of the Pure Land Buddhist sect active in the early Muromachi period (1336-1573).
In 1602, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, buried his mother, Odai no Kata, here, and the temple came to be called Denzuin Temple, after her Buddhist name, Denzuin-dono.
Within the temple grounds are many graves of women associated with the Tokugawa family, including Oda no Kata and Ieyasu's granddaughter, Senhime.
