Blessed with a mild climate, the Kinan region, primarily Minabe Town and Tanabe City, grows high quality plums. The history of “ume” plum cultivation dates back to the Edo period, when the Kishu Tanabe clan encouraged its cultivation.
The highly regarded local agricultural ecosystem has sustainably produced high quality plums for 400 years, and in 2015 the "Plum System of Minabe and Tanabe" was recognised as a World Agricultural Heritage Site.
