Ishibu Tanada

Ishibu Tanada

The Ishibu Tanada is 4.2 hector terraced rice paddy consisting of 370 rice fields, spread along altitudes of 120 to 250 meters, and from there you can have a grand view of the Suruga bay.
On sunny days from this terrace you can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Fuji, as well as the Minami Alps.
Tanada are paddy fields created in a staircase pattern on the slopes of mountains or valleys.
Roughly speaking, there are two styles used for building rice terraces, one is called “Doha”, where slopes between the fields are built with solid earth, and the other is called “Ishizumi”, where the slopes are built with stone masonry.
Doha is seen around East Japan, and in the western part of Japan the slopes are often built with stone masonry.

The rice terraces in Ishibu area are the stone masonry style, which is rare in eastern Japan.
The terraced paddies had been abandoned for a while, but were regenerated in 2000 as the start of a village revitalization project.
Under the “rice paddy owner system” started in 2002, anyone can experience agriculture while receiving kind guidance from rice-making professionals.
