Kuni Palace (Yamashiro Kokubunji Temple Ruins)

In 740, Emperor Shōmu moved his court from Heijō to Kuni, and the ruins of Kuni Palace became the foundation of our country's capital city.
In 746, after the capital city was relocated back to Heijō, the site was given to Yamashiro Kokubunji Temple, and a seven-story pagoda was constructed.
The many historic ruins found here are overflowing with romance, and are reminders of the fact that Kuni was once an important location in Japanese history.
Located nearby is the Kuninomiya Learning Center, where videos (DVDs) showing digital reconstructions of Kuni Palace are shown, and tiles and earthenware unearthed from archaeological excavation of the ruins are exhibited.
