Sarushima Island 猿島

Sarushima Island, the only uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay

Sarushima Island is an uninhabited island, and the only natural island in Tokyo Bay.
It takes about 10 minutes by ferryboat from Mikasa Pier, which is adjacent to Mikasa Park, to go to this popular tourist spot.
There, you can enjoy outdoor activities including swimming, barbecue, and fishing.
You can walk all the way around the island in about an hour.
The ferryboat can accommodate about 200 people, and it operates daily every hour.
There are sofa seats and deck seats on the ferryboats.
We recommend going out to the deck to enjoy the scenery when the weather is nice.

Sarushima Island means monkey (saru) island (shima).
Many people might think, "Are there monkeys on Sarushima Island?" Unfortunately, there are no monkeys.
So, how did it get the name "Sarushima Island"?
Its origin dates back to a legend from the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
When Nichiren Shonin, the founder of the Nichiren sect, tried to cross the sea from Boso (Chiba prefecture) to Kamakura (Kanagawa prefecture) by boat for missionary work, there was a storm and the boat almost got wrecked.
Then, a white monkey appeared and led them to this island.
It is said that the island was named "Sarushima Island" due to this legend.

Considered to be a leisure island, "Sarushima Island" has a lot of charm in each season

One of the attractions of "Sarushima Island" is an outdoor experience.
You can enjoy fishing and barbecue throughout the four seasons.
From July to August, the Sarushima Island beach just across from the Sarushima Island pier is open.
There are two great fishing spots, one is the rocky "Oimono hana" in the back of the island, and the other is a sandy beach called "Satetsu no Hama (Iron sand beach)" near the harbor.
Especially in the rocky areas, the complex terrain makes it a perfect hideaway for fish.
Many fishing enthusiasts gather there to find rockfish such as fat greenling, scorpion fish, and Japanese stingfish.

There is a rental shop in the administration building on the island.
You can rent a set of gear, such as a fishing rod, tackle, and bait, so even beginners without their own equipment can casually experience fishing there.
Visitors can enjoy barbecue on the beach all year round. However, it is necessary to reserve the equipment at the rental shop in advance because the Yokosuka City Ordinance prohibits people from bringing cassette stoves, charcoal, ignition agents, etc.
onto the island from outside.

Nationally designated historic site "Sarushima Island Battery ruins"

Sarushima Island is an island rich in nature, however, historically it had a fortress belonging to the Japanese army during the early Meiji era (1868-1912).
It used to serve as a military base for the defense of the capital from Tokyo Bay, with a battery deployed there.

As you walk a little further from the beach area, the atmosphere changes.
You will find a beautiful brick fortress facility there.
There are still narrow paths called Kiridooshi which were made by digging rock walls and covering them with bricks to make the inside of the island invisible from outside.
There are also barracks and ammunition depots that were built by digging out the walls.
Among them, the brick structures built using the "Flemish bond (commonly known as French-style bond)" method are very valuable.
There are only a few examples of this kind of structure in Japan.

As you proceed through the path, you will come across a tunnel made only by bricks (commonly known as the "love tunnel").
The tunnel was built to carry cannon balls to the surrounding battery.
It is 90m in length, and the inside is very dim, so couples who visited the tunnel would naturally want to hold hands.
That's why it was called "love tunnel".

"Sarushima Island" was designated as a national historic site in 2015 since it contains a fortress used by the former Japanese army and was closed to the general public until the end of the war, and it had valuable historic buildings in addition to being rich in nature.
