Venue for Pop Circus in Yokosuka 2024: History of the Uraga Dock
The history of shipbuilding in Uraga is long and storied. Shortly after Commodore Perry’s arrival, in the first year of Ansei (1854), Saburo Nakajima and his colleagues constructed Japan’s first Western-style warship, the “Hououmaru,” in Uraga. Saburo Nakajima was an assistant commissioner at the Uraga Magistrate’s Office, responsible for negotiations with Perry’s fleet, and he lost his life in the Battle of Hakodate.
In 1891, on the 23rd anniversary of Saburo Nakajima’s death, Ikunosuke Arai, a comrade from the Battle of Hakodate, proposed building a shipyard in Uraga. This idea was supported by Takeaki Enomoto, who lobbied influential local figures. Consequently, Uraga Dock Co., Ltd. was established in 1897, and a dry dock was constructed two years later.
The company evolved into Uraga Heavy Industries and became part of Sumitomo Heavy Industries. Over its approximately 100-year history, until its closure in March 2003, the shipyard built and repaired over 1,000 vessels.
In March 2021, Sumitomo Heavy Industries donated the dry dock to the city. This brick-built dry dock is one of only four such facilities (comprising five docks) worldwide and the only one remaining in Japan. It is a valuable historical site and a “satellite” of the Yokosuka Route Museum.
