Kano Shrine
The Shrines of Uraga: East and West Kanō Shrines
Situated across Uraga Port from each other, the East and West Kanō Shrines face each other. The East Kanō Shrine is home to a well where it is said that Katsu Kaishū performed a purification ritual (mizugori) before fasting atop Myōjin Mountain, prior to his trans-Pacific voyage on the Kanrin Maru. The main hall ceiling (gōtenjō) of the West Kanō Shrine is adorned with carvings of flowers and birds, which were not present in Japan at the time, as well as sculptures of guardian deities supporting the beams. Visitors may enjoy searching for these intricate details.
Komainu
The guardian lion-dogs (komainu) at the West Kanō Shrine both have their mouths open in the “a” shape, while those at the East Kanō Shrine have their mouths closed in the “un” shape, suggesting that together they form a complete pair.
Both shrines are known as power spots. It is said that if you place a magatama (curved bead) from the West Kanō Shrine inside a protective amulet bag from the East Kanō Shrine and carry it with you, it will bring you good fortune in relationships, including love.
The Uraga Ferry connects the East Kanō Shrine and the West Kanō Shrine.
Yokosuka Museum of Art
The Yokosuka Museum of Art first opened in 2007, as part of the commemorations for the 100th anniversary of its municipalization. It is surrounded on three sides by the rich nature of the Kannonzaki Prefectural Park and directly faces Tokyo Bay.
The walls and ceiling of the museum have been designed with holes of various sizes opening to the outside world in order to create a feeling of spaciousness and enable visitors to feel and enjoy the surrounding nature from inside the building. Visitors are also able to freely exit and reenter the museum from the hillside or seaside and explore the nearby lighthouse or the battery ruins to fully experience the immersion of nature, history, and art.
