Slalom: A Marking Battle Full of Speed!

Five competitors racing across the sea in the Windsurfing World Cup

“Slalom” is a windsurfing competition where you can experience the most speed. Starting from the upwind start line, you round several marks set downwind, racing for speed towards the goal. The race development is full of speed, and especially the first marking greatly affects the ranking, so intense battles and tactics are unfolded. The simplicity of the fastest person running through the course being number one is also the charm of “Slalom”.

Fin vs Foil

The “fin” attached to the bottom of the board can now be replaced with a “foil” depending on the conditions from the 2021 event. The foil is a hydrofoil developed for windsurfing that allows the board to run while floating above the sea surface. One of the features is that a race can be established even in weak winds, and “iQFOil”, which will be officially adopted from the Paris Olympics, is a boat type that is attracting attention now.

Tournament Rules

The competition is conducted in a tournament format, and typically 8 people compete in one heat (group), with the top 4 advancing to the next heat. In PWA races, a system is adopted where top-ranked players (or those who ranked high in the previous race) are seeded and participate from the second and third rounds. The final race is conducted by 8 people who have won the tournament (including the losers’ revival), and the tournament is repeated as much as time allows for the first race, the second race, etc. The final ranking is determined by the overall results.
