Local sushi that is popular outside Wakayama prefecture


Mehari-zushi, originally used in lunch boxes for mountain workers in the Kumano region, got this name because the rice balls were so large, they were not only eaten but feasted on with the eyes.
Originally, it was simply a handful of cooked rice wrapped in salted takana* leaves. Nowadays it can be made with a variety of ingredients.
