IKKYU-AN: Homemade soba noodles using completely home-milled flour

IKKYU-AN is located to the side of the main gate of Jindaiji Temple, and it is easy to spot because it has a large waterwheel and a tanuki (raccoon dog) statue.
The whole process of making soba flour from hulled, whole buckwheat sourced from farmers in Japan takes place within this soba shop.
IKKYU-AN is the only soba shop in the Jindaiji area that makes soba noodles from completely home-milled soba flour.

IKKYU-AN: Recommended soba menus

IKKYU-AN offers three types of homemade soba noodles.
These are called “Ju-wari,” “Kyu-wari,” and “Hachi-wari” respectively.
IKKYU-AN sources buckwheat from a different region and uses a different milling method for each of these types of noodles, so you can enjoy comparing the different textures and flavors.

○ Ju-wari Kurumi-dare soba 1,430yen

The fragrant and rich homemade sauce that uses fresh walnuts goes extremely well with the flavorful Ju-wari soba noodles.
Mix plenty of it into the noodles to enjoy.

○ Ikkyu Tamago-dare soba 1,100yen

Ikkyu Tamago-dare soba uses the Kyu-wari soba noodles, which are made of 90% buckwheat flour and 10% ordinary flour.
Add some tsuyu soup into the runny poached egg to adjust the flavor to your preference.

○ Soba dango 120yen (1 stick)

Try out this homemade soba pastry that has been served at IKKYU-AN for generations.
The soba dango comes with two “dips” that you can enjoy and compare.
One is a sugary soy sauce syrup, and the other is a crushed-sesame sauce. They both go well with the soft, sticky cakes made using buckwheat grains.

IKKYU-AN’s original, fully homemade soba flour

【A message from IKKYU-AN】

Our wish has been to serve the best Jindaiji soba to our customers. So we unhull the domestically-produced buckwheat grains at our own mill, making our soba flour using a stone mill that is in our shop.
Although this method requires extra efforts and costs, we do it because we believe in fully homemade soba.

IKKYU-AN also welcomes sake lovers with a great selection of sake, including “Juyondai”, and “O-roku” which is normally very hard to procure.
The soba manju and soba dango sweets are also sold as gifts.
At the shop, we also sell the soba hulls that we removed from the grains when making the flour.
Please let us know if you wish to purchase some. They can be used as filling for traditional soba cushions and pillows.
